Can You Do DIY Home Restoration after a Storm?

If you are living in a house that gets damaged because of a storm, or something similar to it, do not be alarmed. Whether someone else is doing the repairs for you or you are doing them yourself, there are things to keep in mind. The tips will help make your home restoration go smoother and more quickly.

Steps for DIY Home Restoration:

1.) Consider an insurance policy if one has not been obtained already. If there is damage, this should help out with costs involved with the restoration process.

2.) Before beginning any kind of repair work always wear protective gear including safety goggles and gloves so that no dust particles get into your eyes or worse enter your body through open cuts on hands etc. If possible wear breathing masks as well.

3.) Start by removing furniture if it had not already been done. If there is damage on the floor remove it before putting the furniture back in its place.

4.) Next, cover all windows and exterior doors with plastic sheeting. This will keep any moisture from entering your home which could cause mold or mildew to begin growing in places that were not damaged such as under carpets and sinks.

5.) After everything has been covered then use a vacuum cleaner to clean up any debris left behind after cleaning up water stains etc...The next step would be to remove any wet items such as clothes, bedding and blankets and run them through a washing machine several times so that no mold grows on them while they are stored away.

6.) You should look to see if the roof has been damaged and determine whether or not you want to fix it yourself or have someone who knows more about roofs do the work for you. It is possible to patch up a roof, but this does depend on where the damage is and how big it is because sometimes roofs will need to be replaced all together due to too much damage.

7.) If everything has dried out enough so that mold will not begin growing, take out all floor boards in affected areas so that they can be sanded down and treated with fungicide before replacing them back into place. Then cover area around walls with plastic sheeting again to keep dust from entering other areas of the house while new boards are being put back into place.

8.) Now that everything has been repaired it is time to start cleaning again and get rid of any lingering moisture in carpets and under sinks by using a dehumidifier.

So all of this can be done by you however if you want an ideal restoration process then it is better to hire a storm damage restoration service. A professional storm damage restoration service can do wonders for you and make your house look as good as new.

Tips for Repairing Storm Damage

Tips for Repairing Storm Damage

Storm damage can come in the form of fallen trees, roof damage, and interrupted electrical service.  The good news is that most storm damage repair jobs are low-skill projects that do not require an extensive level of knowledge or experience to handle on your own.

Even a fairly small tree has the potential to cause substantial damage during a storm if it falls onto a home or other property. Fortunately, there are several steps you can take after a tree has fallen into your yard to help prevent further problems from developing.

Assess How Much Damage Has the Storm Caused

The first thing to do after a storm is to assess how much damage it has caused to your property. This will give you a good idea about how much money you might have to spend on the repairs and restoration. So it is always good to have insurance for such cases.

Contact Your Insurance Company

Check with your insurance agent before starting repairs. Insurance coverage is dependent upon the type of storm, its location and other factors. Some types of damage may not be insured.

Document all storm-related damages to your home or building using photographs or video before making any repairs. This will provide a full record of damage for future reference should it become necessary to file an insurance claim later.

Only Focus on the Things That Are Actually Damaged During the Storm

Repair only those areas that are immediately damaged; stop further damage by boarding up broken windows, covering exposed outdoor electrical wiring or gas lines, etc., as soon as possible after the event has passed. Dispose of debris promptly in order to avoid mosquito breeding sites. Keep children away from dangerous materials such as broken glass, tarp-covered tree branches and other hazards.

Seal Holes in Foundation, Roof and Siding to Stop Water from Going In

Make sure to properly repair all holes in the roof and walls due to fallen trees or wind gusts. These holes can not only let water seep in but they can create easy access points for wasps, bees and other insects that could be attracted to water inside your home's damaged walls or foundation.

Repair Tree Damage to Your Property As Soon As It's Safe to Do So

One of the best ways to prevent more damage is to get damaged trees off of your property as quickly as possible. If there is a lot of damage, it may be wise to contact an arborist for advice and assistance if needed.

Hire a Professional to help you with the restoration

Storm damage is not always an easy task to take on yourself.  Hire a professional if you feel intimidated or do not have the time to deal with the cleanup and repairs your property may require after a storm. SERVPRO can help you with the restoration of your property after a storm has caused its destruction.

Wind-Driven Rain Can Cause Serve Damage

1/19/2022 (Permalink)

During a strong storm winds can gust up to 50 mph and during hurricanes, the winds can gust up to 75 mph. These winds can then bring wind-driven rains that can cause damage to your home. The damage can push roof shingles up and cause damage to attic spaces or ceilings of homes. The rain can also get through the opening of doors and windows which can cause extensive damage to your property. Not all insurance policies cover these types of losses that is why you should check with your insurance agent to determine what your policy covers.

In case you do have a water loss be sure to contact the experts at SERVPRO of Mount Ephraim/ Bellmawr. We are industry leaders in the restoration industry and use the latest and greatest technology. We also have IICRC certifications and also SERVPRO specific training to handle any size loss.

Winter Storm Damage Tips and Tricks

11/12/2021 (Permalink)

Winter brings cold weather, shorter days, and a much-anticipated holiday season. It also brings a very real threat of severe weather, according to the disaster recovery specialist of SERVPRO of Mount Ephraim. “Ranging from flooding rain in the Northwest to thunderstorms and tornadoes in the Southeast, winter weather can be unpredictable at best and downright dangerous at worst.” Depending on where you live, here are some of the ways a winter storm might damage your home or business:
• Water damage caused by flooding from melting snow, foundation washouts from coastal storms, frozen pipes that burst, sump pumps that fail during power outages, or torrential downpours
• Fire damage caused by the use of alternate emergency heat sources, sprinkler systems that fail due to freezing pipes, downed power lines, or environmental conditions leading to structure fires.
• Wind damage caused by fallen trees and limbs, damage to siding and roofs, and downed power lines. Of course, most of these hazards don’t happen in isolation, for example, tornadoes and violent thunderstorms put property owners at risk for water, fire, and wind damage.
It’s important to understand which hazards might affect your property and your family, and then take the proper steps to prepare. We suggest investigating resources available online from the U.S. Government’s “Ready” program at Ready.gov and other free tools, like the SERVPRO READY app at READY App. Home and business owners can use this app to store essential contact and property information electronically, and then access it in seconds with a mobile device. Local business owners who also designate SERVPRO of Mount Ephraim/ Bellmawr as their disaster mitigation and restoration provider gain peace of mind from a no-cost assessment of their facility conducted by SERVPRO professionals, who then assist the owner in completing a comprehensive Emergency READY Profile® (ERP) to be stored in the READY app. SERVPRO is an industry leader and provider of fire, water, and wind cleanup and restoration services. For more information about weather-related damage restoration services, please visit Storm Damage. For more information on SERVPRO of Mount Ephraim/ Bellmawr, please contact us at 856-349-7318.

Winter Storm Season in New Jersey

10/18/2021 (Permalink)

As summer has just ended and the fall weather is just hitting us, now is the best time to get prepared for the winter storm season.

Here are some tips on how to be prepared for the winter weather:

  • Trim any tree branches that may be close to your house. As snow accumulates on branches it can affect the integrity of the branch and cause it to break off from the tree.
  • Make sure that you have working flashlights and have enough batteries to last in case power goes out. Think about investing in a portable charger for cell phones.
  • Items to put in your car:
    • Extra hats, gloves, and jackets.
    • Ice scraper and a snow shovel.
    • You can put kitty litter in your trunk to help put extra weight under your back tires. You can also use it to help you get a grip when stuck in the snow.
  • Stock up on canned food.

These are just a couple of tips to keep you safe during the winter months. If you have water damage or storm damage please call SERVPRO of Mount Ephraim/ Bellmawr who are leaders in the restoration industry. We have the knowledge and expertise to handle any size disaster. We have national accounts with all of the major insurance carriers and know how to get your house back "Like it never even happened."

How to Prepare for a Power Outage

5/1/2021 (Permalink)

At any time your residency can experience widespread power outages due to wind and storm effects.  Do you have a plan for a power outage at your home? Getting prepared now, before one happens, will make any future outage more manageable and ultimately safer.  Beyond the annoyance of not being able to check Facebook or take a hot shower, a power outage can present safety issues. Food can go bad, certain medical facilities or devices may not be in operation, and water can become tainted. Use these helpful tips to prepare yourself:

  • Create a list of every vital power-using item in your home.  Things like your refrigerator should be on this list, where something like video games should not.  Stock batteries for items that can use them.
  • If you are on a medication that needs to be refrigerated, make sure that it maintains the proper temperature after the power goes out.
  • Do your best to keep any refrigerators/freezers closed until power is restored. Stock non-perishable food and water to consume in the meantime. Check food temperatures to make sure no food has spoiled.
  • If you have access to a generator, remember to operate it a safe distance from your home to avoid inhaling fumes.

5 Tips To Protect Your Home This Winter

1/20/2021 (Permalink)

5 TIPS TO PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM WIND AND STORM DAMAGE

  1.  CHECK AND REPAIR YOUR ROOFS FLASHING AND SECURE LOOSE SHINGLES— Flashings are the metal pieces that protect the seams of the roof and around the chimney and vents.  Loose or damaged flashings can allow wind and rain to get under the shingles and cause damage.
  2. REMOVE TREES TOO CLOSE TO YOUR HOME— Trees that are too close to the home can cause major damage if it should fall during a storm.  Even healthy trees can topple if the ground becomes too oversaturated and soft.  Trees should be planted far enough away from the home so the height at maturity equals the distance from the home.
  3. TRIM YOUR TREES AND LARGER SIZED BUSHES-- Damaged or dead branches and limbs can break off and become projectiles during high wind storms, causing damage to your home and property.  Make sure to trim the dead and damaged branches from trees and large bushes.  Not only will your trees be healthier…. But you could potentially be saving yourself from future wind damage.
  4. SECURE YOUR GUTTERS AND CLEAN THEM OF ANY DIRT AND DEBRIS— Common sense?  Maybe, but you would be surprised how many people neglect the care of their gutters.  Check your gutters and make sure they are securely attached to your home.  Make repairs if needed.  Keeping your gutters clear of dirt and debris (branches, leaves…. BIRD NESTS??!!) will help keep rain water flowing off your roof.  When your gutters are clogged up the water can’t drain properly.  Eventually the water will pool and drain back into your roof, creating another set of problems.  LEAKING ROOF.  WATER DAMAGE.  MOLD.  Fun stuff!!  Well, not really…… so make sure to clean those gutters!
  5. WAIT UNTIL LATE SPRING TO PUT OUT LAWN FURNITURE— This sounds like a good idea, right?  Early spring thunderstorms can be damaging, so waiting would make sense.  WELL… better yet let’s just anchor down those projectiles!  Thunderstorms and severe weather can happen at any time.  If you are going to put furniture outside it is best to anchor down as much as you can and put away any non-anchored furniture if a storm is brewing.

Hopefully these tips and suggestions are helpful.  Being proactive against potential wind and storm damage is always better than dealing with costly repairs that could have been avoided.

Fall Storm Damage

11/9/2020 (Permalink)

As we get deeper into the Fall and Winter, winds will begin to pick up, these winds can become dangerous and leave damage. But windstorms are not on the radar of many people, and these homeowners get caught in a pickle when violent windstorms strike. A way to prepare is to make sure your garage door is secure. This might even involve hiring a company, but an easy way to know is to check the garage and its parts to make sure everything is tight. Also, check the shingles on your roof, wind can get under these shingles and rip them off. Ways to see if your shingles are loose are, checking for missing shingles; this could be a precursor for what can happen in heavy wind. Take a glance for sagging this is a telling sign for loose shingles. Outdoor furniture is an item that often gets forgotten and can blow away, bring it inside or secure it down outside to ensure no one gets hurt by flying furniture. Finally remove dangerous trees or branches from your area, if strong enough winds come through there could be serious damages.

Sump Pump Failures From Storms

3/6/2019 (Permalink)

A sump pump is an important part of your basement and makes sure that your basement doesn't flood. A sump pumps job is to redirect water away from a house and into a dry well when it is raining but a sump pump can fail for 7 reasons:

7 Things that Cause Sump Pump Failure

1. Power Failure

The most common cause for sump pump failure is an electrical power outage. To prevent this, have a backup generator that can be manually activated. In the case that your primary pump mechanically fails, though, a generator cannot help in this situation. But in the event of a storm where the power is knocked out for any length of time, a backup generator can be a lifesaver.

On the same topic of power, some components of the sump pump may be vulnerable to damage from power surges. To prevent this, protect the entire electrical system from power surges with a service entrance surge protection device.

2. The Sump Pump is the Wrong Size

If you have an incorrectly sized pump, or if the pump is not installed properly, there will most likely be a problem. A small sump pump is often just as effective as a big one. When a sump pump is too big, the pump is forced to work harder, resulting in a shorter product lifespan. But if it’s too small, it may not be able to adequately pump out the water – again resulting in a shorter lifespan.

3. Improper Installation

Installing a sump pump must be done exactly right. Manufacturer’s instructions must be followed carefully for the installation in order to avoid severe water damage down the road. Most manufacturers recommend or require a check valve to be installed on the discharge line. If not installed, the back-flow of water can cause the pump impeller to rotate backwards and unscrew off the motor shaft. In this scenario, you will still hear the pump motor running, but it would not be pumping any water.

Most manufacturers require the drilling of a small air relief hole in the discharge line between the pump and the check valve which is intended to prevent the pump from having to overcome the air pressure in the discharge pipe. The discharge pipe must be of the required diameter.

Lastly, the sump pump pit should not be set in dirt or gravel. This causes debris to enter into your pump and can result in interference with the pump’s on/off switch or float arm.

4. Switch Problems

The leading mechanical cause of sump pump problems is a switch problem. This occurs when the pump shifts from its position inside the basin, rendering the float ineffective. Float is responsible for the smooth operation of the on/off switch. Your sump pump relies on both the switch and the float arm mechanisms to operate effectively.

5. Lack of Maintenance

Some pump manufacturers recommend the pump to be run every 2-3 months. Some recommend a yearly program completed just before the rainy season hits.

Here are some additional manufacturer recommendations:

  • If there is a back-up pump, unplug the primary pump and run the back-up pump to make sure it works properly
  • When testing your sump pump, go outside to make sure it is discharging water
  • Sometimes the pump can run but not pump any water. This means the impeller has disengaged from the pump shaft or the check valve is installed backwards.
  • Check the operation of the float to make sure it is not restricted
  • Clean out the air hole in the discharge line
  • Listen for any unusual noises when the motor is running
  • Replace the battery on the back-up sump pump every 2 or 3 years

6. Frozen or Clogged Discharge Lines

If water cannot exit your home through the discharge line, your system will not work. It is important to keep the discharge pipe protected from freezing and free of sticks, dirt, rocks and other debris. Protecting the water’s exit point of the discharge pipe will keep debris and animals out of the system, making it optimal for your sump pump.

Grated covering will not stop the lines from freezing or becoming blocked by ice and snow. A special grated discharge line attachment should help; it is placed near your home on the discharge line. It includes openings that give water a way to flow out of the pipe if the line is blocked further down.

7. Product Defect

Though rare, product defect is always a possibility and does happen. It is wise to test the pump when it is initially installed to make sure the pump operates properly.

If your basement does flood because of a sump pump failure make sure to call SERVPRO of Mount Ephraim/ Bellmawr for all of your flood needs at (856) 349-7318.

How To Protect Your Home From Storm Damage

2/5/2019 (Permalink)

We are just getting into the stormy season and now is the time to inspect your home and property for any damages and repairs that need to be done.  Making repairs BEFORE a severe storm hits is important to limiting any resulting damage.  We have created a handy checklist of some important things to watch out for, and to help you protect your home and property.

Sump Pump Failures in Camden County

2/23/2018 (Permalink)

Home suffers storm damage

Sometimes life throws a curve ball or in this case a fast moving storm.  The storm caused a large tree to fall through the roof and puncture a large hole thankfully no one was hurt.  With the large hole in roof during the downpour water intrusion was inevitable.  We received the call went to the site placed a tarp on the roof and began remediation services.
